Dell Inspiron 16 Plus review: excellent performance, without breaking the bank

Construction

The design of the PC last year has evolved and presents a dress no longer blue, but dark green metallic aluminum. The rendering is good, but we see immediately that the level of requirement is not the same as with the XPS range. The cover sinks under pressure and the edges of the screen are plastic. However, they remain fine and the 16:10 format is appreciable.

The keyboard is pleasant to use and its backlighting is adjustable on 3 levels. The numeric keypad has disappeared on the right side and some users might find this a shame. The Power button acts as a fingerprint reader and the touchpad is rather fluid, even if the quality of the click is to be reviewed – it sinks a little too much when pressed on it.

The click of the touchpad is not very pleasant.

The webcam now films in 1080p, which is good news. Its image quality is correct, but it is always better to favor a bright place. On the other hand, it does not allow the use of Windows Hello to quickly unlock a session, but a physical cache can slip in front for more security. The connection is otherwise very complete, since there are two USB-A 3.2 Gen1 ports, a Thunderbolt 4 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, an SD card reader and a mini-jack socket. Enough to satisfy many uses, without the need to use a hub. Finally, the fastest standards have been chosen on the wireless side, with wifi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.

To disassemble the chassis and access the components, simply remove the Phillips screws. The M2 SSD is replaceable as needed, as are the battery and RAM sticks. It is thus possible to change its configuration; a good point.

Finally, on the heating side, this laptop is doing well. We recorded a maximum of 38.9°C in the center of the keyboard using Cinebench, but the whole thing remains around 30°C overall. The ventilation is effective, but it still blows quite hard (39.5 dB recorded during this test), which can be annoying in the long run. However, it does not normally trigger in office use.

The Dell Inspiron 16 Plus does not heat up much.

Performance

We are now familiar with the Intel Core i7-12700H processor (6 high-performance cores, 8 efficient cores and a base TDP of 45 W) which is on board here, associated with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM and a 512 GB SSD. once again proved to be very fast in the tasks we gave it (overall CPU index of 151). It can be used in demanding applications without asking too many questions.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus: excellent performance, without breaking the bank

The Inspiron 16 Plus is thus positioned as a safe bet that puts the very good Ryzen 5800H from AMD and even the 6900HS from the Corsair Voyager at fault. It is also – logically – ahead of the Core i7-11800H of the Inspiron 16 Plus of 2021 and is clearly displayed as one of the best processors of the moment on laptop PCs.

The Iris Xe integrated graphics part does not work miracles, but allows you to play some old or undemanding games.
The SSD turned out to be quite fast, with 5 GB/s in reading and 3.9 GB/s in writing. It remains of course behind the models embedded in computers gaming.

How does grading work?

The Inspiron 16 Plus is evolving in small steps in 2022 and Dell is improving a recipe that was already working well. The design of the PC is certainly not as refined as that of the XPS, but if you are looking for a computer with a good performance/price ratio, it is an excellent option. Adorned with extensive connectivity, a well-calibrated screen and a quality headphone output, this laptop can be used by content creators, but it will be necessary to move towards a version with a dedicated GPU for more better performance in this area. Some negative points are still to be noted, such as a limited maximum brightness, a bulky charger and the absence of a numeric keypad which could annoy some users.
