The Witcher: first two successful seasons, the 3rd expected
Adapted from Andrezj Sapkowski’s novels, The Witcher series features the famous Geralt de Riv as Henry Cavill, we also find Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), Cirilla (Freya Allan), Dandelion (Joey Batey), Triss (Anna Shaffer) or even Vesemir (Kim Bodnia). The first season was highly watched, although some criticism about readability of the frame and special effects have made themselves felt.
More linear, the second season released on December 17, 2021 was also well received, pushing Netflix to continue the adventure and announce a third season in April 2022 for a release in summer 2023. Production is underway, although it was slowed down for a time by Henry Cavill, who contracted Covid-19 on set. We didn’t expect to hear any news of the next seasons before the publication of the third, but it was nevertheless the case.
The Witcher renewed by Netflix, but Henry Cavill gives up!
This weekend, Netflix announced that The Witcher series has been renewed for a fourth season, allowing Lauren S. Hissrich to continue the story with her teams. Teams that have recently been singled out on the internet, because some of the screenwriters would not appreciate CD Projekt’s games, nor the Polish author’s novels, and would even make fun of them. The showrunner then took the floor to explain that she needed people who are familiar with these elements, without being huge fans. The goal ? Having a team of scriptwriters capable of taking a step back and to carry out the necessary work of adaptation.
Anyway, the machine is on the way, and subscribers will have at least two additional seasons to discover over the coming months and years. Henry Cavill will of course be back in the White Wolf costume, but only for season 3. The actor has indeed made an announcement that risks to sadden many fans, and to worry others. On his social networks, Henry Cavill, who formalized his return as Superman at DC, indicated that he would no longer be part of the adventure after season 3 ! On Instagram, he said:
My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventure, and alas, I’ll be laying down my medallion and swords for Season 4.
Henry Cavill’s replacement already known!
The reasons for this departure have not been officially revealed, but it seems that the separation from the teams of the series and Netflix was done amicably, and that Superman had a role to play in the decision. We will therefore find Henry Cavill in season 3, but he will be replaced for and from season 4. Do we know the replacement for Henry Cavill? Well yes, since the actor and Netflix have formalized the thing. The next Geralt of Rivia will therefore be Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games)the brother of Chris Hemsworth who is well known for his many appearances in the role of Thor within the MCU.
In my place, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will take the mantle of the white wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent playing Geralt and with excitement to see Liam’s interpretation of this man among the most fascinating and nuanced. Liam my good sir, this character has wonderful depth, have fun diving into it and seeing what you can find, Cavill posted on Instagram.
Liam Hemsworth also split a statement to announce their arrival at the casting in the title role. He uses it to give a low salute to Henry Cavillof which he has been a fan for years, and to indicate that he hopes to live up to it.
As a fan of The Witcher, I’m over the moon to have the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored to have him hand over the reins to me and allow me to take on the blades of the White Wolf for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I have been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have big boots to fill, but I’m really excited to step into the world of The Witcher.
Reactions, and many projects announced and expected
The reactions were numerous following this announcement. Many spectators protested a great surprise and a certain incomprehesion, while others have openly indicated their disappointment. These include fans of the show and of Henry Cavill as Geralt, but also more critical viewers, who indicate that the show doesn’t work. only by thanks to the presence of the British actor.
Anyway, The Witcher on Netflix is far from over. On December 25, fans will be entitled to a prequel miniseries, The Witcher Blood Origin, which will tell the story of the birth of the first witchers. We will find there in particular Michelle Yeoh, Laurence O’Fuarain or Jacob Collins-Levy. On the games side, the license is also in great shape, with a next gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to come, a brand new trilogy, a remake of the first The Witcher under Unreal Engine 5 by Fool’s Theory, and the Sirius project, entrusted to The Molasses Flood.
