The film Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom comes out this Wednesday in our dark rooms, and the surprises are already announced many, whether at the level of the distribution or the hidden references. One of them is quite simply brilliant.

“The meeting of two legends of French culture”

This Wednesday, the French will have the chance (or not) to discover at the cinema a new adventure of the two irreducible Gauls imagined by the Uderzo-Goscinny tandem. And this time, it’s Guillaume Canet’s turn to wear Asterix’s mustache, but also the director’s hat for this 5ᵉ film. And for this new opus, the French actor saw things big, especially on the distribution side. Gilles Lellouche, Jonathan Cohen, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Angèle and even Zlatan Ibrahimović will give the reply, in this comedy which takes us for a ride on the side of China – or rather on the side of the Middle Empire.

We are in 50 BC The Empress of China is imprisoned following a coup fomented by Deng Tsin Quin, a traitor prince. Helped by Graindemaïs, the Phoenician merchant, and by his faithful warrior Tat Han, Princess Fu Yi, only daughter of the Empress, fled to Gaul to ask for help from the two valiant warriors Asterix and Obelix, endowed with superhuman strength thanks to their magic potion. Our two inseparable Gauls of course agree to help the Princess to save her mother and liberate her country. And here they are all on their way for a great adventure to China. But Caesar and his powerful army, always thirsty for conquest, have also taken over the leadership of the Middle Empire. Allocinated

The film Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Empire will be released in theaters on February 1, 2023.

And as if the cast wasn’t enough to provoke laughter in the room, the producers (Pathé, Trésor Films and Editions Albert René) and Citroën had the brilliant idea of slipping a clever easter egg into this Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Empire. Spoiler: he has a very close connection with horses.

A “concept tank” that honors an automobile legend

As you will have understood, Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom will put on the image a crossover of the most delirious. The partnership between Citroën and the producers has made it possible to create a “concept tank” – and not a concept car – especially for the purposes of this film. In a communicated published last month, Pierre Leclercq, Director of Style at Citroën, wrote:

The meeting between these two legends of French culture could not fail to prove extraordinary. The Citroën and Asterix film teams have worked together with mutual respect from the start. We had the incredible chance to create and build the first “concept tank” ex nihilo, and we had a blast working on this project! The result is an ode to the mythical 2 CV, which represents Citroën in all its glory.

Solid oak bodywork, Lutèce canvas roof, recycled shield wheels, boar belly suspensions, extra dynamic firefly headlights and trunk forged in Gaul, here is the brand new 2 CV, “a formidable chariot made in Gaul, drawn by two horses. » This little easter egg makes it possible to bring up to date a silhouette recognizable all over the world which is part of the French cultural and popular heritage. A small tour de force, the Citroën styling teams succeeded in building this concept tank in the space of just three months. Cinephiles will be able to find this vehicle, starting tomorrow, in several scenes of the filmwhich is sure to make a few laugh – or at least smile.
