Beef meat: what health risk?
The Institut Pasteur explains that the bacterium listeria monocytogenes is responsible for listeriosis. The latter is a pathology that can affect humans, but also animals.
As for the symptoms, we must watch out for fever. The person who has consumed the contaminated product may feel headaches and body aches. The person may also feel digestive disorders followed by nausea or vomiting. In some cases, there might be neurological complications such as meningitis or encephalitis.
People at risk should be especially alert to these symptoms. In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause serious consequences for the unborn child. Maternal or fetal damage may occur. The elderly and immunocompromised people should also be careful.
Note that the incubation period for listeriosis disease can range from up to eight weeks.
Contamination invisible to the naked eye
Little reminder, listeria contamination of a food product cannot be seen with the naked eye. There is no noticeable change in the appearance of the food. Contaminated food products always look appetizing. They always have the same taste and smell. Vigilance and caution are therefore required. As they say, prevention is better than cure!
It is always good to remember that this kind of reminder is implemented to prevent unpleasant surprises. As already said above, serious consequences can be caused by such contaminations. Deaths can even occur. Above all, do not be seduced by the harmless appearance of these food products.
