An unknown virus is discovered in France with a patient with hepatitis

SANTÉ – A virus unknown to him identifié chez une Française de 61 ans. This is not the debut of a science-fiction film, but the discovery of many French chercheurs from the Pasteur Institute, from the Necker-Enfants malades AP-HP hospital, from the Imagine Institute Inserm, from the Université Paris-Cité and from the École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort (EnvA). Des dommages au foie

The 61-year-old patient suffered from the inconnu virus, était régulièrement suivie après une greffe de coeur et des poumons réalisée 17 ans plus tot. Mais c’est la survenue chez elle, end 2021, of an unexplained hepatite chronique, who led the doctors to realize, in March dernier, a sequencing génomique sur des échantillons des tissues malades. Et c’est donc en analysant ces tissues that the chercheurs ont découvert le « Human Circovirus 1 ». « L’implication du HCirV-1 dans l’hépatite a été démontrée grâce à l’analyse d’échantillons de la patiente prélevés au cours des années précédentes pour son suivi dans le cadre de ses greffes. The results showed that the viral genome of HCirV-1 was undetectable in the chantillons of blood from 2017 to 2019, so that its concentration was at a peak in September 2021 », explains Marc Eloit, a des auteurs de l’étude, head of the laboratory Découverte de pathogenènes at the Institut Pasteur and professor of virology at the École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort (EnvA).

Well that the patient does not have light symptoms, the virus inconnu a creé quelques dommages au foie. The chercheurs estimate that 2 to 3% of the cells of the foie are infected. « One was that the virus availed itself of the resources of the liver cell to multiply it, destroying it », specify Marc Eloit.

The creation of a PCR test

If the origin of the virus remains to be identified, « de même que la source de l’infection elle-même (contact, alimentación, etc.) », as le rappelle l’Institut Pasteur, cette découverte a permit de developper un test PCR spécifique pour le diagnostic d’hépatite d’origine inconnue. Il est désormais réalisable par tout laboratoire hospitalier.

D’autant plus que des nouveaux cas se présentent régulièrement. « Les cas d’hépatite aiguë reported chez des enfants au Royaume-Uni et en Irlande en avril dernier et signalés par l’OMS le rappellent », souligne l’Institut.

« Il également essentiel d’avoir la capacité d’identifier un nouveau pathogene lorsqu’une infection est inexpliquée et de mettre au point un test diagnostic, car potentiellement tout nouveau cas d’infection par un pathogene émergent chez l’homme peut être témoin d ‘a debut d’epidemie » concluded Marc Eloit.
